Week 1
They danced. Relatively simple steps, turns. Each flowing seamlessly into the next. Light smiles played across their faces, entrancing all who watched. The music stopped, applause came, and the man lifted his daughter into his arms.
~
Resting his head against his arms, Thomas sighed. Five days. Five endless, draining days. Regaining his composure, he looked to Ezra.
“Give me the map.”
Week 2
It was an old film. Well, new to him, but Cheryl had said it was older than she, so, for him, it was old.
Mike shifted uncomfortably. He hated old movies. Where was the action? The drama? The explosions? Storyline, pah. Some chick singing in what he guessed was French did not a good film make.
Cheryl’s head hit his shoulder and he remembered why he was there.
~
She felt like a character in a film noir. Not that that was a bad thing.
Elyse sighed. The film noir switched to a music video as her roommate came in, in one of his rare good moods, singing along under his breath.
It wasn’t until he’d coerced her into dancing with him that Elyse let the smile split her face.
Week 3
As much as he loved watching silent films, he hated being in one. Lex flipped dark bangs out of his eyes, straining to read Katrin’s whiteboard.
‘Lost your glasses?’ it taunted.
Rolling his eyes, he raised his own marker. Laryngitis outbreak his ass.
~
Karyn hated that song. She heard it every time anyone ever showed interest in her. It wasn’t so bad when they could carry a tune.
A door slamming disrupted her thoughts.
“Rough day?” Karyn smirked.
“Shaddup,” Roxanne snapped.
Week 4
She figured that most people here were here for the groom. The bride was a bit (read: majorly) anti-social. Nonetheless everyone watched raptly as they danced. Well, most everyone. Her attention was on the stage.
The song began to fade, the singer replaced the mic. Kari looked at her husband and smiled.
~
The melody was pretty simple. He’d learned it easily when she’d brought it in. She had a habit of swaying as she sang, he’d noticed.
He smiled: even on stage she had excess energy. Even at the end of the night.
Catching her eye as the song ended, he smiled brightly, graciously accepting the embrace she ran to offer.
Week 5
He smiled. She was quirky as hell. She went through these phases. One week it was a new cigarette brand, the next it was a new author.
One week she only ate apples. The next, she insisted the sky was green.
He found he didn't mind.
~
He'd never understood why Elyse insisted on the piano. It was a lovely black baby grand, so it wasn't that the thing was ugly; it just didn't fit at all with the rest of the apartment.
She'd play it occasionally. He only ever caught snatches of pop songs he vaguely remembered. He found it odd that she'd never sing the words.
Then came Christmas. It was probably around 2 AM when he heard the haunting soprano.
She'd been waiting for the right song.
Week 6
It was odd. She was, admittedly, not music literate, but she could have sworn this song was sung by a woman.
He didn't notice her confusion, singing along, dancing around the kitchen, throwing smiles her way.
He paused as the song ended, turning serious, holding her gaze, repeating quietly, "If you want, I'll try to love again."
~
He was not a happy person. So naturally, it made no sense to him that the rapid-fire lyrics he'd heard long ago were scanning through his head.
Sighing, he checked his holstered weapon, turned to his partner, and asked, "Ready?"
Bright green eyes answered him.
At any rate, these were essentially writing warm-ups in the Creative Writing course I'm taking. Two songs at the beginning of class, write whatever you want to them. None of them really have any specific characters in mind, with the exception of Week 6, Part 2.
Anyway, no, I don't know what the songs were, save for Week 1, Part 2 being something where the only discernible lyric was "I don't know where I'm going," Week 3, Part 2 being 'Brown-Eyed Girl' I think, Week 4, Part 1 being 'Can't Help (Falling in Love With You),' Week 5, Part 1 was to a Regina Spektor song, Week 5, Part 2 was written to a Piano/Vocal song, but with 'You Would Have Loved This' by Tarja Turunen in mind, Week 6, Part 1 was written to a male-vocal (original?) version of 'The First Cut Is The Deepest,' Week 6, Part 2 was, I think, written to New Found Glory's 'The Story So Far', but I could be wrong on that.
